Dr. Ross S. Deavours graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in May 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree (majoring in Speech Pathology and Deaf Education) and from Auburn University in August 1997 with a Master of Speech Communication (Audiology) degree. In 2003 Dr. Deavours was awarded the Doctor of Audiology degree from Arizona School of Health Sciences, A.T. Still University.
Ross began her professional career as the Mobile County Public School System's first full time audiologist in 1977. There she conducted hearing screenings and worked with hearing impaired students. Later she became the first audiologist for the newly established Southwest Regional School for the Deaf and Blind. Her sign language skills improved dramatically during these years.
In 1989 her husband was transferred to Helena, Alabama (outside Birmingham) and Ross worked at Lakeshore Hospital where she quickly found out that she liked working with adults. In 1995 she went to work for Dr. Don Bryan, an Otolaryngologist in Alabaster (3 miles from her home in Helena) and with his encouragement participated in establishing the first infant hearing screening program at the Shelby county Hospital.
In 1996 the Deavours family moved again, this time to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Ross went to work as a speech pathologist for the Ocean Springs Public School System. Bay Area ENT approached her about becoming their first full time audiologist and held the position for her until the end of that school year. She worked at Bay Area ENT from the summer of 1997 until January of 2005. While at Bay Area ENT Ross established the first infant hearing screening programs for Biloxi Regional Medical Center and Ocean Springs Hospital as well as earning her Doctor of Audiology degree.
