GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A chance to meet some Harrison County political candidates had a fun theme. It was all about Peelin' and Politickin'. There was gorgeous weather and a beautiful view of the beach, all while enjoying shrimp, beer, and meeting some of the men and women running for office.
"We think the name is fun and the theme is fun, but the most important thing to us is that people have the opportunity to be involved in the community with an informed voice and this is an excellent way to do that," said Hannah Burnett, Director of the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce.
Mississippi Gulf Coast Chamber of Commerce hosted the event on the lawn of Lynn Meadows Discovery Center in Gulfport. About a dozen candidates running for city council were there to meet and greet voters.
"I think this is a great setting to meet these guys, these candidates, and find out their stance and what they feel is important," said Jessica Ellzey.
Hannah Burnett said events like this are important ahead of an election because it's a one-stop shop for voters to meet the candidates.
"We are guided by our mission and everything we do is under our mission. One of the pillars of that mission is connection. So, we are offering the opportunity for elected officials, as well as the community at large, to be connected to one another," said Burnett.
Only a small crowd attended the event. One voter noticed the turnout.
"I think that's a problem you see in a lot of your elections. The vast part of your population seems so interested in political events with different political agendas, but when you actually have a chance to come be part of it or get your voice heard, nobody shows up," said Cole Graham.
This is the last political event the Gulfport Chamber of Commerce will host before the May 2nd elections. Candidates were admitted free of charge; Attendees only had to pay for their food.
