JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

On a spring night 47 years ago, a riot broke out on the campus of Jackson State College. Riot police and state troopers were called in and quickly surrounded the campus. A hail of bullets left two students dead and a number wounded.

Monday, JSU held the 47th annual memorial ceremony and wreath laying in remembrance of Phillip Gibbs and James Green, who died. Vernon Weakly, also a student, was shot in the leg.

"I was a student. I got shot in the leg right over there in that spot, one of the few that got shot that night," said Weakly. "And it was a very tragic experience. It had a major impact on my life. I was telling them, even to this day it's tough on me to even be here and see this."

In the wake of Kent State riots and the JSU event, The President's commission on campus unrest opened investigations.
