GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - A Gulfport tax return preparer is facing years behind bars and thousands of dollars in fines after pleading guilty to obstructing the IRS and filing false returns Monday.
A news release from the Department of Justice says Doris Kelley's scheme cost the IRS nearly $500,000 in tax loses.
Court documents show Kelley, 65, operated a tax return preparation business out of her Gulfport home. According to the DOJ, Kelley told several clients who owed money to the IRS to write checks directly to her instead of the federal agency.
Kelley reportedly cashed the checks for herself and used most of that money to gamble at local casinos. She also filed false returns in her clients' names without their knowledge.
Kelley is set to be sentenced July 7. She faces a maximum sentence of three years for both counts.
