Ole Miss sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson helped lead the offense to a 31-29 win over the Rebels defense in the annual spring football game before 8,000 fans at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Patterson completed 21 of 30 passes for 341 yards and two touchdowns. He tossed a 28 yard touchdown strike to D.K. Metcalf, who made a nice move on a defender and found the end zone. Patterson tossed a 76 yard touchdown strike to A.J. Jefferson. The sophomore from Starkville made a spinning move and he was off to the races.
Patterson said, "To have those guys like A.J. and D.K. and Van take off like that and get that yards after the catch, it's huge. It makes my job a lot easier."
Junior college transfer quarterback Jordan Ta'amu displayed game breaking ability in the passing game. He tossed a 74 yard touchdown to Van Jefferson. Ta'amu passed for 188 yards in limited play.
Head coach Hugh Freeze had mixed feelings after the game. He said, "You wanna high five your receivers and say 'hey man, great job', and then you wanna....Man we can't give up explosive plays so it's very difficult for coaches to ever leave a scrimmage feeling really good."
Ole Miss opens the 2017 season hosting South Alabama on September 2.
