LATTA, SC (WMBF) – One child was injured after a tree fell onto a home on Bethea Street in the Latta area Wednesday night, according to information from the National Weather Service.

The child was taken to a hospital in Florence following the incident, according to the NWS.

“We’re keeping them in our prayers that everything will be OK," said Debra Rouse, who lives across from the house where the tree fell on Bethea Street.

As a strong storm system rolled across South Carolina Wednesday, it brought severe weather to the neighborhood.

“Extreme wind, rain, hail," Rouse said. “It was blowing to the point that you could not even see across the street.”

Rouse heard the tree fall, but she wasn't sure what caused the loud sound.

“I stepped to the back to call my sister to check on her and my mom and I heard a boom," she said. "I couldn’t really see what it was.”

She soon realized the situation was serious.

“After the emergency vehicles came then stayed and there were photographers and people going in and out, I felt like something happened, but I didn’t know what until a friend texted me," Rouse said.

She added the child who was injured is around 4 or 5 years old.

“I’ve seen him out playing. I see them almost every day," Rouse said. "They’re always outside playing with their dad, playing ball. Sweet, sweet kids.”

She said trees often fall in the neighborhood during bad weather, but this one is a major hit for the community.

“They’re certainly in our prayers and everyone in the town I know is praying for them," Rouse said.

By the middle of Wednesday evening, people from the community worked to remove pieces of the tree from the roof in order to cover it with a tarp. A man with the group said he knows the family.
