Navy volunteers take on fire prevention mission

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Navy volunteers will be canvassing the Gaston Point community in Gulfport today, installing smoke detectors and sharing advice about fire safety.

They are working with the American Red Cross on a fire prevention campaign. That group has set a goal of reducing fire injuries and deaths by 25 percent by the year 2020.

The military volunteers are part of this week's ongoing Navy Week activities along the coast, recognizing the service and celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Seabees.

    A man accused of killing his girlfriend's 7-month-old son made his first court appearance Thursday. Michael Harris, 27, was charged with capital murder Thursday after Tanner Cowart died at USA Medical Center in Mobile.
