Under perfect weather conditions, Round One of the 2017 Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic went off without a hitch thanks to the Sun God's were shining down on Fallen Oak one day after the Pro-am was canceled by severe weather.
Joe Durant, is familiar with playing in sunshine. He's from Pensacola. Durant is your leader after he fired a 6-under, 66 with seven birdies and one bogey.
One shot back defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez, Lee Janzen, Jay Haas and Scott Hoch who caught fire late.
Hoch said, "It feels good to start off the tournament well. It was slow early, kept hitting all the greens and made eight straight pars. And then I guess I shot 5-under the last ten holes."
Glen Day, a 1983 Poplarville High School graduate is two shots off the pace with a 4-under, 68. He opened the first hole with a birdie and came close to drilling a couple of hole in ones.
Fan favorite John Daly, yes in those colorful pants, is three shots off the pace with a 3 under, 69.
Daly said, "I just hit it good. I just didn't make many putts because the greens are so perfect, that all you've got to do, get it on line and they'll go in."
The solid field will launch the second-round Saturday morning beginning at 9, .gates open at eight.
Durant leads the pack, but 36-holes remain and the title is up for grabs. It's going to be another exciting finish!
