OCEAN SPRINGS, MS (WLOX) -

The property on the north side of Highway 90 near Bechtel Boulevard is nothing but woods and fields. But in the future, it could look like something much more elaborate.

The proposed project by Thrash Development will be large scale.

“They're looking at five structures. Two are going to have mixed use with commercial downstairs and then two floors of residential upstairs. The other three buildings will be all commercial,” city official Hilliard Fountain explained.

While the project includes 92 condos, the property has to be prepped.

“Site work is everything below grade. All their subsurface drainage, utilities, etc. That will all have to be in place before they go vertical with anything," said Fountain.

When that happens, it could be an economic game changer, according to city alderman at large Bobby Cox.

“I think it's wonderful from the city standpoint. I think we need more development, we need more buildings. And a development of this nature, a $10 million dollar investment in our city is wonderful,” Cox said.

While city elected officials and building officials are excited about the prospective condo development on Highway 90, perhaps the people most excited are the business owners right across the street.

“I think it's going to bring more people to Ocean Springs, and to the Coast in general and of course. If we're right here to have an opportunity to capture folks with our menu, and maybe get them to come over here and hang out a little bit, that's a plus for us,” Coffee Fusion owner Adam Flinchum said.

If all goes well, site work could begin in May, with actual construction starting later in the year. City officials say the entire complex will be built at one time, and not in phases.
