Ole Miss Experiences "Stay Alive Saturday"

NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ Mississippi's Ronnie Goodwin tossed a three-hitter as the Rebels knocked Southern out of the New Orleans NCAA Regional on Saturday with a 10-2 win. Second-seeded Ole Miss (39-22-1) moved on to face Oklahoma State in an elimination game late Saturday. The winner plays top-seeded Tulane (52-10) in the final-round game scheduled for Sunday. Burney Hutchinson hit a pair of two-run homers for the Rebels, who scored seven runs in the first four innings. Goodwin (5-2) struck out seven and walked one. He had given up only one hit and had a shutout with one out in the ninth. Southern's Marcus Chandler struck out, but reached first on a passed ball, Franco Blackburn doubled Chandler home and Rickie Weeks hit an RBI single. Losing pithcer Eric Thomas (8-1) had six strikeouts, but he and reliever Torik Harrison combined for 10 walks. Southern, which went into the tournament as the fourth seed, ended the season at 43-12.
