Do you ever wonder who is in charge of local police and fire staffing in your neighborhood? Who decides pay and benefits for police officers and fire fighters. Who sets zoning law for a piece of property down the street or around the corner? Who decides city regulatory fees, business licenses, street maintenance, storm drainage, flood control, water, sewer, garbage pick-up, code enforcement?
Many of these activities and services touch our lives regularly. The people who set the policies that guide all of these departments and services are the elected leaders of city government.
Municipal primary elections for almost every city in South Mississippi are set for May 2nd. But you can't vote if you are not registered.
You have until April 1 to register. If you don't vote, you leave the decision of who runs our cities to the people who want a voice, the people who register, the people who vote.
That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to editorials@wlox.com.
