The business of forfeiture of drug money and property to police agencies just got a little more transparent to the public and we view that as a good thing. The Mississippi state legislature is now requiring the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics to maintain a public website that tracks all such forfeitures taken through civil court proceedings.
The new law also requires someone besides the police agency to handle the civil forfeiture court cases. We agree seizing money and property of drug traffickers is a law enforcement tool needed to fight crime. But taking of personal property is not a matter that should be taken lightly.
We agree with these changes requiring the tracking of forfeitures publicly. That's our opinion, we would like to hear yours. Email your thoughts to email@example.com.
