JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Jackson County Sheriff Mike Ezell said a capital murder warrant has been issued for Thomas Elliot Stafford, 40.

He is wanted for the murder of Jerry Floyd Kirkendall, whose body was found in a freezer inside a home in the Latimer community Monday. Ezell said U.S. Marshals are assisting in the search for Stafford.

Investigators believe Kirkendall, 65, was a tenant who lived in the house where his body was found, and Stafford may have been his roommate at one time.

The owner found the body after noticing a foul smell inside the home when he stopped by to give a potential renter a tour. Officials said the deep freezer had been unplugged for some time.

According to Ezell, the homeowner said the last time he saw Kirkendall was March 3 when he paid rent.

Surveillance video from a nearby store shows Kirkendall the same day he was last seen by his landlord. He was wearing the same clothes in the video that were found in the freezer with his body.

Investigators believe Stafford stole the Kirkendall's 2001 gold Cadillac. Neighbors tell us he could be headed for Chicago, and they won't rest easy until he is caught.
