DIAMONDHEAD, MS (WLOX) -

Several new projects are underway in Diamondhead that city leaders say will make the city safer and more of an attraction.

Ed Heffelfinger just moved his family to the Gulf Coast for work, and decided to settle in Diamondhead.

"We looked around the local area, lots of different cities, and we really liked what we saw in Diamondhead," said Heffelfinger.

As pleased as he is with the city, he was surprised to find out there are plans in the works to make things even better.

"We've got a lot of projects. We're very proud of Diamondhead and we are trying to enhance living and get more folks to see Diamondhead and learn what it's about," said Ward 1 Councilwoman Nancy Depreo.

These projects include extending roads and creating safer routes for students who walk to school bus stops. Other projects that are receiving a lot of hype include placing more lighting around the Diamondhead exit on the interstate and a new kayak and biking trail.

Some of these projects are already under construction, like the exercise and fitness walk being built right in front of city hall.

"It'll be a walking trail over on the west side of Diamondhead to allow residents in this area a chance to have some outdoor activity," said Depreo.

"I like it when they're continually improving the amenities for the folks that live here. I like to see new things coming in that will keep the community energized," said Heffelfinger.

Several projects are expected to be complete by the end of this 2017, while others should be finished by 2018.
