CONKLIN, NY (CNN/WBNG) - An evening walk on the ice turned deadly on Sunday. Two brothers, ages 7 and 8, were playing near their home in Conklin, NY.

They walked out onto the ice-covered Susquehanna River when the ice gave way and the 7-year-old boy fell into the water. Their mother heard screaming and ran to help. Then she and the 8-year-old boy fell in. Neighbors were able to pull them from the water.

But the 7-year-old was trapped under the ice, and swept away by the currents. Rescue teams later found him. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“I arrived on the scene first, entered the... went out onto the ice and entered the water. Actually had the coat in my hand at one point, and lost it. And the victim floated down river farther," said Chief Bill Gorman of the Conklin Volunteer Fire Department.

"Vibrant, infectious personality. Big smile that lights up the room. He takes over when he comes in as far as being the light of their day. The staff is uh, very distraught," said Roland Doig, Susquehanna Valley Central School District superintendent.

Connor Brown was a second grader at Donnelly Elementary School. The superintendent says Brown had lots of friends, and his loss will be deeply felt.
