HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Mississippi Highway Patrol has charged a driver involved in a deadly overnight crash on I-10 with DUI causing death.
Michael Kennedy, 27, is charged in the Sunday night crash that killed 22-year-old Robert Ivey. Kennedy is also charged with careless driving, a misdemeanor. His bond was set at $250,000 for the DUI causing death charge.
MHP spokesman Chase Elkins said Ivey and his girlfriend were hauling a red car on a trailer towed behind a pickup truck when the truck ran out of gas near the Menge Ave. exit. Elkins said the couple parked on the shoulder and offloaded the red car to go get gas.
The couple parked the red car behind the trailer when they returned. Kennedy allegedly hit both vehicles while Ivey was putting gas in the truck around 8:50 p.m.
Elkins said Kennedy had lost control of his GMC Yukon before the crash. His vehicle flipped into the median after crashing into the car and truck.
Ivey was pronounced dead at the scene, and his girlfriend was taken to Garden Park Medical Center. Elkins said she has been treated and released.
