GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

It was perfect weather for a celebration, and that's exactly what happened in Gulfport on Saturday.

The annual Unity Festival took place in central Gulfport with hundreds of people filling the area, blocking off 30th through 33rd Avenues. All sorts of vendors set up shop, selling everything from candy, to homemade goods, and of course delicious food.

Organizers say it's the ninth year for the festival, and the participation continues to grow each year.

"We're working on trying to change mindsets on what community is, because community is a state of mind. It's not just a place where people live, but it's a place where people live and they have a singular focus and goals," said Alicia Netterville.

Money raised from other Unity Rally committee events go toward their annual scholarships. For more information on the scholarships, contact Unity Festival president Casandra Harper (228) 863-0307.
