Alabama Community College System appoints new chancellor

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Community College System has appointed a permanent chancellor.

The Opelika-Auburn News ( reports that Jimmy Baker will assume the position on April 1. He became the system's acting chancellor last year when Chancellor Mark Heinrich took a medical leave of absence.

Heinrich submitted his resignation last month because of his health issues.

Seven applications were reviewed for the chancellor position. A trustee told the board during a meeting Wednesday that the committee recommended and unanimously approved Baker for the position.

Baker served as Heinrich's chief of staff before becoming elevated to acting chancellor six months ago. He was a lobbyist for the two-year college system where he was paid $384,000 by Calhoun and Enterprise community colleges in 2014 and 2015.
