Forrest ex-deputy gets nearly 4 years of prison on tax fraud

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - The former chief deputy sheriff of a south Mississippi county and his wife are going to federal prison for tax evasion.

U.S. District Judge Keith Starrett on Friday sentenced former Forrest County Chief Deputy Charles Bolton to 45 months in prison. Local media report that his wife, Linda Bolton, was sentenced to 30 months.

The Boltons were convicted Sept. 15 in federal court on five counts of filing false tax returns. Charles Bolton was also convicted of four counts of tax evasion.

The couple must jointly pay $146,000 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service. Charles Bolton was also fined $10,000, while Linda Bolton was fined $6,000.

A jury convicted each of dodging taxes on revenue from their restaurant and liquor store.

Both will report to prison in 60 days.
