HARRISON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Rashad Johnson pleaded guilty in the 2014 murder of Lamont Hayes in Harrison County Circuit Court this afternoon.

Joined by his defense attorney, Phillip Wittmann, Johnson told Judge Larry Bourgeois about the night of July 22, 2014 when Hayes was shot in his home on Carson Dr. in Gulfport.

Johnson told the judge he and Jalen Williams went to Hayes' home to rob him for money. A struggle between Hayes and Williams ensued, and Johnson said that's when Williams slide him the gun and told him to get Hayes off of him.

Johnson said that's when he shot at Hayes. The prosecution said Hayes was shot twice. One of those shots severed an artery.

Hayes was transported to Garden Park Hospital, where he died early the next morning.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for some time in early May.
