Officer Cleared In Fatal Shooting

A Jackson County Grand Jury says Pascagoula Police Officer Michael Byrd did nothing wrong in a fatal shooting on Tuesday.

Byrd shot and killed Edward Williams at Kings Inn in Pascagoula. Williams was holding an assault rifle. Police say Officer Byrd told him to drop it three times. When Williams failed to obey the order, Byrd fired three shots killing Williams.

"After hearing testimony from five different witnesses, including review of the statements of several eye witnesses, the Grand Jury deliberated, finding the shooting justified under the circumstances," Jackson County District Attorney Keith Miller said in a statement released Friday.

Officer Byrd is the son of Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd. The victim is related to two people who work for the Pascagoula police department. Sheriff Byrd is asking for prayers for his son, and the family of the victim.
