The Mississippi Economic Council says 2,300 bridges are restricted from carrying the legal weight for which they were designed. And just last week, one state legislator announced recent safety inspections will result in the closure of 100 bridges.
Roads and bridges in Mississippi need improvement. No doubt about it. This as an important public safety and economic development matter.
It is clear, we need to pump millions of dollars into the highway system. What is equally clear; money is short. The state is cutting expenditures, with tax revenues falling short of expectations.
We sympathize with those charged with figuring out how to divvy up the tax dollars every year. It would certainly be ambitious to repair all the bridges and roads quickly. But we need ambitious plans from ambitious leaders. We need both short and long term plans. Plans the state will implement and stick with to make our highways better.
