Twelve champions will be crowned at the 2017 Mississippi Golden Gloves Boxing Championships beginning 6 p.m. Saturday at the Pascagoula Recreation Center. One of the marquee fighters is a light-heavyweight contender.
Chris Polk is deliberate in his boxing style...throwing punch after punch after punch. I feel sorry for the punching bag and his next opponent.
If you take a good look at the 30-year-old amateur fighter, he resembles a former Heavyweight Champion.
Polk said, "I fell in love ever since I saw Mike Tyson fight. So, I never got a chance to do it as a kid and I still want to take my shot."
His next shot is the Mississippi Golden Gloves Light-Heavyweight championship on Saturday. Combine his punching power, determination and his age...Polk has an edge over the competition.
"Being older may be an advantage because some of the guys will be younger, "said Polk. "But also being in shape and training the way I train, give me an advantage that I need."
Boxing coach Keith Hughes says after Saturday, Polk will turn pro and can go a long way in the boxing game.
"This is something that is in his heart, "stated Hughes. "He's going to do really well. He's beat guys that have been in boxing for eight years, who have won National Tournaments and he's stopped them, TKOed them in the third round. so this guy has a great chance of doing really well."
Winning a Golden Gloves title would be a great way to launch his pro boxing career. He can't wait to jump inside the ring.
Polk said, "The thrill of the fight. You get in there, your adrenaline is pumping. It's just one-on-one, two Warriors going at it and at the end of the day, the winner goes home."
The winners go home and will punch their ticket to the Regional Golden Gloves Championships April 6-9 in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
