BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. John Bel Edwards is renewing his push for an equal pay law that requires private businesses in Louisiana to pay the same wages to men and women with the same jobs.

The Democratic governor and his wife headlined a summit Friday aimed at drawing support for passage in the legislative session that begins next month.

The effort remains a long shot. Similar legislation was rejected by the House last year amid strong opposition from business groups.

Edwards says he's optimistic about the bill's chances this year. He says it's embarrassing Louisiana has the largest pay gap in the nation, with women earning 66 cents on average for every dollar a man earns.

First lady Donna Edwards says a wage equality law would improve economic conditions for Louisiana's families and children.
