SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - The IRS may owe you more than $500, but time is running out if you want to claim that money.
More than $10 million is actually up for grabs in Mississippi right now. It's money owed to more than 10,000 people, all unclaimed refunds from the IRS.
It only applies to people who did not file a 2013 federal income tax return, so you may want to go take a look at your statements again.
If you find you are eligible for refundable credits, you only have a little more than a month to claim that money.
According to the IRS, the average unclaimed refund for tax year 2013 in Mississippi is $702. To collect what you're owed, you must file a return for 2013 no later than this year's tax deadline, which is Tuesday, April 18.
There is no penalty for filing a late return qualifying for a refund. The law provides most taxpayers with a three-year window of opportunity for claiming refunds. After that, it goes back to the U.S. Treasury.
Your refund check may be withheld if you haven't filed tax returns for 2014 and 2015.
