GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

A pre-dawn surprise for suspected drug dealers. George County deputies teamed up Lucedale police and the newly created South Mississippi Narcotics Task Force on Thursday morning to go after alleged drug dealers.

By 7 a.m., a half dozen street-level drug suspects had been hauled off to jail. George County Sheriff Keith Havard said just before noon, 18 suspects are in custody, many of them known gang members. Havard said his department still has 23 arrest warrants out.

Havard said drug issues haunt George County. In recent weeks, another sting netted suspected drug dealers linked to gang activity.

Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics Director John Dowdy said Operation Showtime was the result of a six-month investigation aimed at taking down street-level methamphetamine, marijuana, and prescription drug dealers.

“I want the people of Mississippi to know that MBN continues to work aggressively with its local and federal partners to purge our communities of drugs and the people who sell them,” Dowdy said. “Drug dealers are hereby put on notice: If you sell drugs, we are coming after you, so start looking over your shoulder. Your time is coming.”
