17-plus years for man in drug, gun case

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Federal prosecutors say gun and drug convictions will land a 33-year-old New Orleans man in prison for more than 17 years.

A news release from U.S. Attorney Kenneth Polite (poh-LEET') says Leroy Smith from eastern New Orleans was sentenced Wednesday. He had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and heroin; and, to possessing firearms in furtherance of drug-trafficking.

U.S. District Judge Ivan Lemelle sentenced Smith to 17 years and seven months in prison.

Prosecutors said Smith worked with others to import fentanyl from China. The news release says that Smith was in possession of heroin, drug paraphernalia, multiple firearms and $3,000 in cash when he was arrested in 2015.
