SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Mississippi lawmakers once again find themselves in a difficult position. They have to vote on a bill to make it a little easier to get a divorce. Clearly this is a sticky issue.
Our elected officials don't want to be seen as; anti-marriage or pro-divorce. But the state is already in the legal marriage and legal divorce business, like it or not. The proposed law makes abusive physical contact, threats, stalking, and financial abuse grounds for divorce.
For too long those on the receiving end of abuse find themselves in long, expensive legal court battles trying to legally end a marriage that, in reality, was already over. Too much money is spent for lawyers. Money that should be spent on the family. This change is needed.
Divorce law changes are not easy votes for politicians, but we agree they should take this stand against physical abuse.
