MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - The search for a new Moss Point police chief is over. Tuesday night, the Moss Point Board of Aldermen voted 6-1 to hire Calvin Hutchins as the city's top cop.
Hutchins' start date has not been set, but aldermen will meet later in the week to work out the details. The law enforcement veteran will take over the embattled department that saw its previous chief, Art McClung, resign rather than face termination.
A lieutenant with the Pascagoula Police Department, Moss Point aldermen initially appointed Hutchins as police chief in 2014. However, Mayor Billy Broomfield vetoed the 4-3 vote one day later.
With reasoning behind Broomfield's decision unclear, residents protested the decision.
Hutchins joins the Moss Point police force with more than 20 years of experience.
The department is also being investigated by city and state authorities amid allegations of misspending from a police benefit fund.
