JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - A Jackson County grand jury has cleared two deputies in the May 2016 shooting death of a D'Iberville man, Sheriff Mike Ezell announced Tuesday.
Ezell said the grand jury determined the deputies acted within the law when they shot 23-year-old Christian Bowman at a St. Martin hotel. The shooting was investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation.
Ezell said deputies were called to the Ramada Inn on Tucker Rd. May 9 to investigate reported drug activity in a guest room.
Investigators said Bowman fought responding deputies, and the incident escalated until one of the deputies shot Bowman. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Bowman's mother, Sherry Bowman, said he left behind a 5-year-old son. She was outraged after she said she learned of her son's death through Facebook.
Sherry said in an interview with WLOX News Now that the deputies brutally beat and handcuffed her son before he was shot.
The deputies were placed on administrative leave after the shooting but have since returned to duty.
