BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - The year was 2000, that was the last time the Harrison Central Red Rebels, captured a State Basketball Championship.
Saturday afternoon on the campus of Jackson State, coach Boo Hardy led his Red Rebels into the quarterfinals of the Class 6A State Tournament... a confrontation with Jackson Callaway.
The Chargers caught fire early and never looked back. Playmaker John Knight was quick, dished off to his teammates and drove to the bucket keeping the Red Rebels defense off-balance. Knight would net 11 points.
Daquan Perkins had a great game for Harrison Central. He scored 27 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.
Coach Boo Hardy and his Red Rebels couldn't contain the Chargers offensive attack and Jackson Callaway ended Harrison Central's season with 23 wins and 8 losses.
It was 31 years ago...when the last Biloxi Lady Indians basketball team played in the State Championship Tournament in Jackson. That will all change tonight at 7, when Biloxi battles Tupelo in the Class 6A quarterfinals in Jackson's Mississippi Coliseum.
First-year head coach Devin Hill changed the attitude at Biloxi with tough practice sessions... and the dedication of the players... led to their success.
It also helps to have talent...led by senior playmaker Breanna Riley.
Coach Hill said, "She just knows how to put the basketball in the right place. Whether that's scoring the basket or whether that's dishing the basketball off. Bree has a tremendous upside and we've done a good job with putting her into position to be successful. Watching her progress and mature on the basketball court it's been fun."
Harrison Central has become a familiar opponent in the Class 6A State Tournament in Jackson. Following the Biloxi-Tupelo game, starting around 8:30...the Red Rebelettes will try to torpedo undefeated Starkville, a team that has run off 29 consecutive wins. One of those victories was over Harrison Central in December.
"They have a big inside player, "said Coach Nancy Ladner. "They have two good guards, but overall I think we match up with them well. The loss did us a lot of good because it told us a lot of things that we had to improve on."
If Harrison Central and Biloxi both post wins, the Red Rebelettes and Indians would meet in the Class 6A State Semifinals 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.
