Vehicle pulled from water in Bay St. Louis; catches fire

BAY ST. LOUIS, MS (WLOX) - A vehicle that was submerged in the water under a Bay St. Louis bridge was removed Saturday morning after a woman drove off the Bayou La Croix Bridge on Hwy. 603.

Shortly after being pulled from the water, crews were heard warning that the Nissan Pathfinder caught fire. They were able to successfully hose the vehicle down to prevent the flames from spreading.

Although officials will only say that the victim is "ok", that isn't the case for the woman's vehicle. A scuba diver had to be called in to connect the submerged car to a tow truck.

J.R. of Big Boy Status Towing was one of men who helped with the retrieval. He says he was happy to be able to lend a helping hand.

"When you're out here doing a recovery and there's tragedy out here, it makes the morale a whole lot different when you're out here trying to do the recovery," said J.R. "I'm glad everybody was ok and that they made it through it."

It is not clear what caused the accident, and it is being investigated by the Hancock County Sheriff's Department. No injuries were reported.
