BILOXI, MS (WLOX) -

Around the Biloxi VA, Lillian Thornton is lovingly referred to as the "blanket lady."

That's because she has crocheted more than 200 lap blankets over the past six years and donated them to the VA. They are then distributed to veteran patients at the VA hospital.

"This is my heart," said Thornton, as she dropped off another bundle of blankets.

The VA staff had a surprise for her this time, presenting her with a framed certificate of appreciation for all that hard work knitting these homemade blankets.

"We'll soon be married 69 years," said her proud husband, John.

John was a World War II veteran and fully supports his loving wife's mission of giving a piece of her heart with every stitch she crochets.
