Proposed budget cuts could cost Ingalls $600M contract

PASCAGOULA, MS (AP/WLOX) - President Donald Trump's budget proposal could cut millions from Ingalls Shipbuilding, according to The Associated Press.

The White House is asking the Department of Homeland Security to cancel its contract with Ingalls for a $600 million Coast Guard cutter. Workers at Ingalls have built several national security cutters at the Pascagoula facility.

Sen. Thad Cochran tacked $640 million onto a spending bill in December 2015 for the ship's construction. Cochran's office says the Coast Guard can use extra national security cutters to fight drug cartels and human trafficking.

Ingalls spokesperson Bill Glenn released the following statement on Wednesday:

"The impact of OMB's direction to the Coast Guard is unknown at this time. We have already purchased long lead materials and have begun pre-production."
