We thought the Mississippi State Legislature was going to do the right thing when it comes to spending the money coming to the state in the BP Oil disaster settlement. Now it's all up in the air and there is no bill and no guidance on where the money goes.
$750 million over 17 years is at stake. This week a bill designed to put the money in an account for Gulf Coast projects died in the state legislature. So for now, when money comes in, there appears to be no restrictions on spending it anywhere in the state.
If the money goes elsewhere, that is just plain wrong. The economic damage done by the 2010 BP oil disaster was done here on the coast and the reparation money should be spent here.
