West Harrison basketball coach Tommy Searight has his Hurricanes in position to do what was thought to be the impossible a few weeks ago....make a run at the Class 5A State Championship. Their next assignment...defending Class 5A State Champion Laurel Saturday night at 7 on the road.
Entering the playoffs, very few people gave West Harrison a shot at advancing into the post season. The Hurricanes had posted only 7 wins.
Despite the losses, first-year head coach Tommy Searight started pulling all the right strings at the right time... the playoffs.
Searight said, "We played a brutal schedule. We played Biloxi, Meridian, Bay St. Louis, Mendenhall, Harrison Central, Gulfport and Pass Christian. So, our schedule has prepared us for a championship run."
The right attitude, working hard in practice and believing in the head coach has proven beneficial. On Tuesday West Harrison beat Jackson Wingfield 53-37 in the first-round of the playoffs.
Searight is using his own personal experience as a member of the 2002 D'Iberville football team that captured the Class 4A State Championship. Searight played wide receiver and defensive back for the Warriors.
"What I tell these guys is ...enjoy the moment, "said Searight. "You can't get these memories back. So, don't get overly excited, but prepare yourself, eat right, sleep well and just have fun. This is the best time of your life."
It will get even better if the Hurricanes can upset Laurel Saturday night.
