STONE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - We now know the name of the man who died Thursday after slamming into a construction truck on Hwy. 49 near the MGCCC Perkinston Campus.
Stone County Coroner Wayne Flurry said Alejandro Pena, Jr., 38, was pronounced dead at Forrest General Hospital. Pena is a resident of Long Beach.
Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Chase Elkins said the northbound lanes of the highway were shut down while crews worked to clear the scene.
Elkins said the truck Pena hit was hauling a flashing arrow directing drivers to switch lanes because of a road paving project in the area. Pena's vehicle came to rest in the median after hitting the truck. Elkins said Pena died as he was being air lifted to the hospital.
Two passengers in Pena's vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
In a tweet, MHP Troop K in Biloxi advised drivers to buckle up, slow down, and pay attention in construction zones.
