SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) - Right now, companies with online sales in Mississippi and no physical presence here don't have to collect sales tax. We view this as an unfair advantage for out of state companies to offer the same products as local companies at a lower cost because they don't collect and contribute the 7% sales tax to the state.
Our local businesses hire local people who work and contribute to our local economy. There is an effort in the state legislature to get this law changed.
On a second front, the state attorney general wants a federal case banning the tax overturned.
We support both efforts. We need to make this fair for our local businesses. We encourage our lawmakers not to let this stall in the current session and go unresolved another year.
