GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Officials have identified the man who reportedly led officers on a high-speed chase through Biloxi and Gulfport on Monday afternoon.
Investigator Grandver Everett, with the Biloxi Police Department, said it all started with a hit-and-run crash on Irish Hill Dr. just before 1 p.m.
Everett said the victim reported a man driving a white truck ran into her vehicle and drove away from the scene. A witness followed the truck to the Edgewater Mall parking garage, and that's where a Biloxi police officer attempted to stop the driver.
Everett said the truck sped off and eventually stopped when it hit a billboard pole near Tegarden Rd. in Gulfport.
The driver, identified as James Michael Evitts II, 26, was arrested and charged with felony eluding and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The passenger in the truck was also taken into custody but was not charged, Everett said.
Judge Bruce Strong set Evitts' bond at $150,000. Evitts, of Perkinston, also had an active felony warrant through the Harrison County Sheriff's Department and the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
