Shuckers campaign hopes to help kids hit a home run with reading

LONG BEACH, MS (WLOX) - Kids in schools across the coast are getting a little more excited to read. A pep rally got things kicked off Friday morning with the help of the Biloxi Shuckers staff.

The guys and girls at Coast Episcopal School heard a convincing and entertaining plea by Shuckers staff including the lovable fluffy mascot, Schooner.

This was the kick off day for the Shuckers-led campaign called Hit the Books.

The rally included book inspired games, competitions, and a special announcement. Part of the campaign includes inviting the students to a Shuckers game for free if they read six books.

"We wouldn't do it if we didn't care about it. I think reading is universally important, especially for kids this age. They need to get passionate about it. We feel like by using sports to connect with them, everyone loves sports, we feel like if they can get that message from a sports team or a mascot, the message is all the more salient," said Erik Bremer, Shuckers announcer.

The staff will be traveling to 19 schools on the coast and talking with around 10,000 students during the campaign, all in an effort to get these kids excited to hit the books.
