East Central Lady Hornets basketball team is young and talented

HURLEY, MS (WLOX) - The East Central Lady Hornets basketball team is well-rounded mixing youth and experience. The Lady Hornets face a stern test tomorrow afternoon at 4 facing Pass Christian in a winner's bracket game in the Region 8-4A Tournament at Vancleave.

One day after defeating home standing Vancleave 59-39, East Central head coach Wes Brewer led his 17 and 8 Lady Hornets through a competitive practice session.

Before Brewer took the job in Hurley, East Central had missed out on the state playoffs for 21 consecutive years.

Coach Brewer said, "This is our third year to make it o the state playoffs and I like to say our district is like the SEC West of football.  Pass, Bay High, Moss Point and Vancleave are just really terrific programs."

Sophomore sensation Sonia Wells is one of the most gifted and talented basketball players that I have ever seen compete in South Mississippi. She's netting 25 points per game and displays a fluid shooting touch.

Wells said, "I've been playing since I was five and I just always like the sport.  I was always playing it.  So, it's always been my love."

Even though Wells has 2 more years of high school basketball...Mississippi State, Southern Miss and South Alabama are highly interested in her talents.

"She's a gym rat, "sated Brewer.  "She's worked harder than anybody that I've ever coached and she's a special talent."

Ressie Doss, Cayce Fulton, Alexis Laughlin and Madison Pearson have all contributed to the Lady Hornets winning ways.  Pearson says the coaching style of coach Brewer has resulted in East Central's success.

Pearson said, "We've had a lot of practices where we work hard.  Work on plays that we're going to run in our games or whatever.  He really helps us."

East Central has already surpassed last season's win total of 15 games, with more playoff games on the way.
