Listeria fears lead to food recalls

(RNN) - Two companies issued recalls because their products possibly may be contaminated by listeria, the FDA reported.

Country Fresh of Conroe, TX, recalled 2,552 cases of cooking and snacking products because they possibly contained Sargento cheeses. Sargento recalled some cheese products earlier over listeria contamination concerns.

The products were shipped to retailers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia under the Country Fresh and store-brand labels. 

The following products are listed:

  • Country Fresh Tuscan Style Mushroom, in a foam overwrap tray, with a UPC of 74641-07211 and best-by dates of Feb. 14 through Feb. 17.
  • Country Fresh Stuffed Mushrooms, in a foam overwrap tray, with a UPC of 74641-07207 and best-by dates of Feb. 14 through Feb. 17
  • Southwest Stuffed Mushrooms, in a foam overwrap tray, with a UPC of 72036-88471 and best-by dates of Feb. 14 through Feb. 17
  • Marketside Garlic Cheese Stuffed Mushrooms, in a clamshell, with a UPC of 681131-14821 and best-by dates of Feb. 15 through Feb. 17
  • Ready Fresh Go Fruit and Hatch Pepper Cheese, in a clamshell, with a UPC of 41220-03680 and best-by dates of Jan. 19 through Feb. 16.

Though no illnesses have been reported, Country Fresh issued the recall to err on the side of caution, the company said.

Customers are urged to throw the products away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. For information, contact the company at 281-453-3305, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. CDT.

A second, smaller recall involves Choice Farms LL, who is recalling seven wrapped trays of Traditional Gourmet Portabella Mushrooms; Pizza Style Portabella Mushrooms; and/or Stuffed Mushrooms sold on Friday at Kroger stores in Arlingtoon, Sachse, Dallas, Nacogdoches, Rockwall and Arlington, TX, as well as Wichita, KS.

The cheese in the mushroom products may be contaminated with listeria. No illnesses have been reported with these products.

People should dispose of these products and contact Choice Farms for a refund. To contact the company, call 800-605-0881.
