GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

A group of young men and women in Gulfport are getting ready to put their skills to the test in Gatlinburg.

The Gulfport Police Explorers are headed back to Winterfest to pit their law enforcement skills against 80 other posts from around the region.

The Explorers have only been competing for two years, but they already have awards to their name; including second place in the 2016 national competition.

"Getting them started early is very important because it gives them something to do that is positive and it keeps them on a good track and keeps them focused on doing good things," said Raymond Brooks.

Donald Knox added, "I love helping people. When I see somebody who needs help, I help them. And I just want to have the badge on to make it official."

The group is mostly made of high school students and a few graduates, many who want to work in law enforcement one day.
