GEORGE COUNTY, MS (WLOX) - Investigator Brad Warrick, with the Greene County Sheriff's Department, said hundreds of South Mississippians could be victims of theft, forgery, and fraud.
Danny Ray Brown, 53, was arrested Monday after Greene and George County investigators executed a search warrant on his trailer located on Johnny Gray Dr. in Lucedale. Brown had been identified as a suspect for cashing fraudulent checks around the area.
When investigators got into the trailer, Warrick said they found hundreds of pieces of mail believed stolen from mailboxes across South Mississippi and Alabama. Investigators are sifting through mail from Lucedale, Leakesville, Sims, AL, Wilmer, AL, Moss Point, Pascagoula, Picayune, Ocean Springs, and possibly more places.
Officials said Brown took checks from mailboxes, changed the amounts and the names on the checks, and cashed them. Investigators have identified 114 victims so far.
Among the things investigators claim he did is take mail out of a Moss Point church mail box, buy computers at the Hwy. 49 Walmart in Gulfport and return them to the D'Iberville Walmart, and take boxes of new checks out of mailboxes. Officials said Brown also bought a truck with cash last week.
So far, Greene County has a warrant charging Brown with methamphetamine possession and forgery. George County is charging him with forgery. He is currently being held at the George County Regional Correctional Facility.
We're told federal investigators could get involved with the case.
