D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - The intersection of Highway 15 and Lamey Bridge Road has seen its share of accidents; some deadly.
After two years of planning, the intersection will soon get a safety makeover. For planners, it's an especially important change because the area is ripe for development, and more traffic means more danger.
For residents, the change can't get here fast enough.
"There's been eight, nine, 10 wrecks here in the past year," said Randy Wheaton, who lives near the area. "It's a terrible intersection because everybody's running through here at high speeds and everybody around here that live in this area are on low speeds."
Wheaton says he was nearly one of those victims.
"I've actually had to get in the ditch to keep from getting rear ended or sideswiped coming out of this intersection right here," added Wheaton.
MDOT is planning to create a roundabout, similar to that on Airport Road and Three Rivers in Gulfport. The $1.9 million project has been in the works for about two years now, and construction could begin in early March.
Even so, Wheaton has his own thoughts about the solution.
"They need to put a stop light so when people come up there, they are actually going to stop," Wheaton said. "A roundabout....these idiots around here ain't got enough sense. They're going to go around that round about at the same speed."
Huey Stockstill out of Picayune has been named project contractor, and construction could be complete by late fall or early winter.
