SOUTH MISSISSIPPI (WLOX) -

Community leaders held a news conference Wednesday afternoon at Centennial Plaza in Gulfport to announce details of the upcoming Bicentennial Celebration.

The March 31 and April 1 celebration is being called the party of the century. The upcoming event will include food, music, culture, art, history, heritage, education, a salute to the military, and much more.

Event chairman and former Gulfport Mayor George Schloegel says planning involves hundreds of volunteers.

“What we're doing is we're preserving history, and we're doing it with lots and lots of partners. This is an all-inclusive event of two days of fun, fun, fun. That's what we're after,” said Schloegel.

Everyone is invited to the two-day, free celebration. Volunteers are finalizing plans and will announce the entertainment line-up next week.

During the news conference, Schloegel shared that Centennial Plaza once belonged to Mayor Billy Hewes' great-grandfather.

“We started putting a lot of folks together, making sure this wasn't about any one group, city or community. This is South Mississippi's party on behalf of Mississippi. And we're kicking it off right here on March 31 and April 1,” said Hewes.
