MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) - The elderly man who was severely burned Thursday in a Moss Point brush fire died around 2 a.m. Friday, according to family members.
William Cunningham, 81, died at USA Medical Center in Mobile, AL, according to his cousin, Bubba Cunningham.
Bubba said William owned the land in the area of Elder Ferry Rd. and Miller Rd. where he was burned. He said William was burning brush on his land when the wind picked up and the fire got out of control.The victim was trying to put the fire out and keep it from spreading when he fell down.
Moss Point Fire Chief Tommy Posey said firefighters found William lying on the ground when they responded to the fire around 1:30 p.m.
William was badly burned on his arms and legs and was air lifted to the hospital in Mobile. Officials called the injuries life threatening.
"The first units saw him lying on the ground and were able to get to him pretty quickly," said Moss Point Fire Chief Tommy Posey.
Posey said the blaze spread to affect 150 acres. Crews from Jackson County and the Mississippi Forestry Commission came in to help get the fire under control.
Posey said it is dangerous to burn, even in a controlled manner, when wind picks up like it did Thursday afternoon.
