HATTIESBURG, MS (WLOX) -

Police in Hattiesburg are investigating after the American Red Cross office on Hardy Street was broken into overnight Friday.

Officials with the Red Cross say the suspect kicked in many doors throughout the facility and stole the office safe, computer equipment and other items.

“In light of this unfortunate event, it will not hinder the ability of the American Red Cross to continue to provide much needed Red Cross disaster relief assistance to those affected by the tornadoes just one week ago,” said John McFarland, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Southeast Mississippi.

Since last Saturday's devastating tornado hit the Pine Belt region, the Red Cross says they have opened four shelters, providing 340 overnight stays to people in need. They have also delivered over 24,00 meals and snacks and provided over 9,200 bulk relief items, such as clean-up kits, tarps, rakes and shovels.

Anyone with information on the break-in should contact the Hattiesburg Police Department at (601) 544-7900.
