Biloxi 5th grader uses lemonade to help classmates

BILOXI, MS (WLOX) - When a fifth grader at Jeff Davis Elementary found out some of her fellow students wouldn't be able to go on a field trip, she decided to step in.

A field trip is planned for students to go to the New Orleans Zoo in April. Teachers had to request donations for students who wouldn't be able to go, so Taylor Lethco offered lemonade as a solution.

"I didn't want anybody to miss out on the fun," Taylor said.

First, she went to work selling outside her home.

"I just sold lemonade, cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and pizza, and I raised $135," Taylor said.

On Friday, Taylor brought her lemonade stand inside the school. It didn't take much convincing for the teachers to allow it since, after all, there's a lesson to be learned.

"You're never too young to start contributing to your community and to help other children, and the values that she's been taught are just beautiful, and that should be a lesson for everybody," said fifth grade teacher Kris Fuller.

Taylor had plenty of helpers with her Mom, Dad, and brothers all pitching in.

"Taylor has a big heart, and it's fun when you see the wheels turn and you talk to them about the needs of people around you," said Taylor's mom, Lisa Lethco. "She was very excited to get out and raise some money for her friends."

It turned out not to be a hard sell. Students lined up for the sweet treats.

"I'm glad lots of people have turned up," Taylor said.

The money raised wasn't the only good thing to happen.

"It's just good to see the kids, the way they react, and their willingness to help those around them," Lethco said.

Counting the sales she had at home and school, Taylor is going to be able to donate more than $600, making it possible for every student to go to the zoo.
