Man sentenced to life in prison for 2015 D'Iberville murder

D'IBERVILLE, MS (WLOX) - A Harrison County jury found Marquis Saunders guilty of first degree and taking a motor vehicle Thursday. Saunders was sentenced to life in prison for the murder charge and five years for taking a motor vehicle.

Saunders, 24, shot 37-year-old Jamel Jones to death outside a D'Iberville apartment complex in January 2015. The deadly shooting happened at the Amber Apartments on Amber Rd.

Investigators said Jamel died at the scene.

Witnessed described the vehicle Saunders left the scene in, and Harrison County Sheriff's deputies found him a short time later driving on Hwy. 67 near D'Iberville High School.

Jones' family said he only lived in South Mississippi for about three years before his life was taken. Jones had moved to the area from New York with his daughter to keep her out of trouble, family members said.

Jones was reportedly just two semesters away from completing his associates degree in culinary arts and had dreams of opening his own restaurant.
